SECKO Karate Championships - 2015

The 9th edition of the SECKO Karate Championships was once again hosted by the Fish River Sun Hotel. The event which is organised by East Cape Shotokan-Ryu under the auspicious of the South African Shotokan Karate Academy (SASKA) saw a record entry of 470 participants from 25 clubs. This year a strong team from Gauteng was also in attendance.
In the Men's Brown & Black Belt Kata Category, Reiner Von Der Marwitz of Port Elizabeth's S&K Karate Club took top honours for the third year in succession. Second place went to Jacques Bardenhorst of Dragons (Kempton Park, Gauteng) while third place was awarded to Lonwabo Ndizma of Joza Karate Club in Grahamstown. The Ladies Brown and Black Belt Kata Category was won by Tayla Chidrawi of Rhodes University Shotokan Club with a solid performance of the kata, Gojushiho-Sho. Roxanne Snyman of Despatch Karate Club and Mel Ackerman of East Cape Shotokan Ryu, Grahamstown placed second and third respectively.

The Men's Brown and Black Belt Kumite Category was won by Jacques Badenhorst - see photo above. Badenhorst will be competing as a member of the SASKA Team in Ireland at next year’s WUKF World Championships. Lonwabo Ndzima placed second and Siyazi Madubela of New Brighton Dojo placed third.
Noloyiso Bonga of Asai Motherwell Karate Academy convincingly won the Ladies Brown and Black Belt Kumite Category for the second consecutive year. Tanya De Villier's of Kase-Ha Dojo in Port Elizabeth won silver, while the bronze medal went to Kayleigh Chamberlain of Western Suburbs Karate Club in Port Elizabeth. Overall Championship honours went to Bert Ulay and his King Karate Club for the second year running. Hosts, ECSR placed second, while Joza Karate Club taking third spot. All three dojos are affiliated to SASKA.
Next year’s SECKO Championship will be held earlier in the year in order to accommodate the SASKA National Championships and WUKF Africa Invitational which will take place in September. Both Championships will be held at the Fish River Sun Hotel.

Best Female Senior: - Andrea Kolkenbeck-Ruh - 90 points
Best Male Senior : - Vincent van Heerden - 120 points
